Disaster committee gives relief to NBR disaster victimsThe Regional Disaster Management Committee of North Bank Region with support from National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) recently distributed relief materials worth over D100,000 to over 30 disaster victims at a ceremony held in Kerewan. Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the governor North Bank Region, Alh. Eduwarr Seckan commended the disaster management authority for their tireless efforts in the mobilization of resources towards improving the plight of disaster victims in the region. He noted that the support would supplement the efforts of affected families in providing an accommodating environment that would enhance the participation of disaster-stricken families in socioeconomic activities. Governor Seckan also underscored the importance the government attaches to the welfare of people and urged the public to desist from disaster prone areas and to utilize the donated materials well. Mr. Poulo .O.N Joof, Regional Disaster Coordinator for North Bank Region urged the benefactors to continue to play proactive roles in ensuring that people adopt appropriate measures in putting up solid building foundation and plant more trees to serve as wind breakers. He noted that the presentation of the non-building materials would contribute in health and hygiene and supplementation of food in the households. Mr. Joof tasked the beneficiaries to uphold to the maintenance of health of children as they are more vulnerable to various illnesses during disasters. The donated materials include: 120 packets of soap, 6 mattresses, 11 bales of second hand clothing, 9bags of rice, 3 boxes of water bags, 40 boxes of bleach and 20 pairs of shoe. Ousman C. Jallow, NBR Regional Red Cross branch officer also used the moment to launch an appeal to the public to be mindful of fire disasters, by carrying out fire belt around the villages. He assured of Red Cross’ readiness to continue complementing government efforts and National Disaster Management Agency in providing humanitarian aid and services to people in dire needs of help. Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Fatou Leigh of Kerr Amadou in Jokadu thanked the National Disaster Management Agency for their unflinching support in providing humanitarian aid to disaster victims in the country. She assured that they would also join hands with the agency in the mitigation of disasters at community levels. |
